Zavelstein

Kleine Burg für wenig Mannen,
Städtlein rußig, eng und schmal,
Rings des Schwarzwalds Edeltannen,
Unten tief das Teinachtal –
Rauhe Lüfte, Wolkenflüge,
Schneegestöber, Sonnenschein:
Also wandernd im Aprilis,
Schaut' ich einst den Zavelstein.

Nie von Riß und Sprung genötet
Ragt sein schlanker Römerturm
Wie gegossen und gelötet
Quaderfest im Zeitensturm ...
... Ruhsam stund der Ortsbewohner
Vor dem Haus im Sonntagskleid,
Auch der Burghof pflag der Ruhe
Winterschläfrig, tief verschneit.

Aber ostwärts auf den Halden
Weicht besiegt der Schneelast Druck,
Seine Kelche hoch entfalten
Will ein wilder Blütenschmuck,
Und im Schmelz der Farbentöne
Dunkelviolett bis weiß
Drängt sich fremde Purpurschöne
Üppigst wuchernd aus dem Eis.

Krokus, Sproß des Morgenlandes,
Seltner Gast auf Schwabens Flur,
Zeugnis ewig jungen Frühlings
Und uralter Weltkultur;
Wo itzt Flocken niederwirbeln
Auf die wohldurchblümte Au',
Pflanzte einst ihr Saffrangärtlein
Eine kluge Römerfrau.

Saft den Süpplein ihrer Küche,
Herzarznei für böse Sucht,
Dunkeln Locken Wohlgerüche
Zog sie aus der edeln Frucht.
Und im Anhauch dieser Blume
Schritt sie, wenn der Frühling nah,
Opfernd zu dem Heiligtume
Der Diana Abnoba.

Zavelstein
Pequeño castillo de pequeños hombres,
Poco hollín Ciudad, apretado y estrecho,
Anillos de los abetos Bosque Negro,
En el fondo del Teinachtal -
cielos, nubes ásperas Vuelos,
Nieve, sol:
Insta a púrpura hermosa extranjera
lechón Üppigst del hielo.
Azafrán, vástago de Oriente,
Más raramente invitado en el salón de Suabia,
Testimonio eternamente joven primavera
Y antigua cultura mundial;

Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel 1860.jpg
Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel
16 February 1834 – 9 August 1919
was a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor, marine biologist,
and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny, stem cell, and Protista. Haeckel promoted and popularised Charles Darwin's work in Germany and developed the influential but no longer widely held recapitulation theory ("ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny") claiming that an individual organism's biological development, or ontogeny, parallels and summarises its species' evolutionary development, or phylogeny.
The published artwork of Haeckel includes over 100 detailed, multi-colour illustrations of animals and sea creatures (see: Kunstformen der Natur, "Art Forms of Nature"). As a philosopher, Ernst Haeckel wrote Die Welträtsel (1895–1899; in English: The Riddle of the Universe, 1901), the genesis for the term "world riddle" (Welträtsel); and Freedom in Science and Teaching to support teaching evolution.
