Los hombres de El Chapo, con una división de ingeniería propia, obtuvieron planos detallados de la prisión y abrieron un túnel de 1.500 metros que desembocó milimétricamente y con escalerilla en la propia ducha del preso número 3.578. Para la obra tuvieron que remover, según cálculos de ingenieros civiles, 3.250 toneladas de tierra. Una cantidad suficiente para llenar 350 camiones medios. Todo ello lo hicieron a la vista de la cárcel (desde sus torres de vigilancia se advierte perfectamente la caseta donde sacaban la tierra) y a 1.700 metros exactos del Octavo Regimiento de Infantería de la 22 Zona Militar. Para escándalo de un país entero, nadie, aparentemente, vio nada. En el pasadizo participaron pocos obreros. No más de cuatro, según los vecinos. A un ritmo de diez horas diarias, trabajaron posiblemente casi todo un año. Sabían lo que hacían. La galería estaba bien asegurada, disponía de iluminación y se ventilaba por conductos de policloruro de vinilo (pvc). Para sacar la tierra, emplearon una banda de rieles y el arrastre de una moto. Una vez fuera, la almacenaban en la bodega, y desde ahí, para escarnio de las fuerzas de seguridad, se la llevaban en camiones. Decenas de miles de sacos. Todo ello ocurrió durante meses a los pies de El Chapo. Hasta que llegó la noche del sábado. Las primeras reconstrucciones policiales indican que a las 20.52 el líder del cártel de Sinaloa entró en la zona de duchas, sin videovigilancia, y ahí no tuvo más que levantar una tapa, introducir su cuerpo en un agujero de metro y medio de largo, y alcanzar las escaleras que le condujeron al túnel. A la salida, dejó su ropa de presidiario y, como atestiguan las cajas halladas en la estancia, elegir ropa nueva. Posiblemente usó también el baño. Después, partió rumbo a la clandestinidad.
