1863 – New York City draft riots: In New York, New York, opponents of conscription begin three days of rioting which will be later regarded as the worst in United States history. The New York City draft riots (July 13–16, 1863), known at the time as Draft Week, were violent disturbances in New York City that were the culmination of working-class discontent with new laws passed by Congress that year to draft men to fight in the ongoing American Civil War. The riots remain the largest civil and racial insurrection in American history, aside from the Civil War itself.

El precio parecía razonable, el lugar
indiferente. La casera juró vivir
sin prejuicios. Nada quedaba salvo
la auto-confesión. “Madame”, advertí,
“Detesto perder un viaje- Soy Africano”
silencio. transmisión silenciada de
fingida buena educación. Voz que llega
como larga boquilla dorada y tubular, impregnada de lápiz labial
Fui sorprendido por su vileza.
“Qué tan oscuro?”... no había escuchado mal... “ Es usted claro o muy oscuro?
Hedor a rancio vaho de refugio público para telefonear.
Cabina roja, buzón rojo, rojo autobús doble
aplastando el alquitrán. ¡Era real! Avergonzada
por el silencio enfermizo, llevé al límite su
turbación para suplicar explicación
ella, considerada, cambió el tono
“¿Es usted oscuro? ¿o muy claro?” advino la revelación
“Quiere usted decir, cómo chocolate puro, o con leche? ”
Su asentimiento fue clínico, rayando en la frialdad de la luz
Rápidamente, una vez ajustada la longitud de onda,
escogí Sepia Oeste- Africano- tras reflexionar dije:
“lo certifica mi pasaporte” Silencio para un espectroscópico
vuelo de ilusión, hasta que el acento de su sinceridad retumbó
con fuerza en la bocina. ¿Cómo así? dijo condescendiente
“No sé lo qué es”. “No del todo”
Facialmente, soy moreno, pero madame, debería ver usted
el resto de mí. Las palmas de mis manos, las plantas de mis pies
son de un rubio oxigenado. la fricción lo ha causado-
torpemente madame - por sentarme, mi trasero se ha tornado
Negro Cuervo- ¡Un momento madame! sintiendo
su auricular elevarse al sonido del trueno
en cuanto a mis orejas- “madame”, sugerí,
¿no preferiría verlas usted misma?
