... ha partido el satélite Sentinel 2A, a bordo de un cohete Vega, desde la base de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) en Kourou, en la Guayana Francesa. El artefacto es el segundo del programa Copérnico de la UE… dedicado a observar la Tierra… Sentinel 2A, con un peso de 1.100 kilos, es el primero de dos satélites gemelos que fotografiarán desde una altura de 786 kilómetros todas las superficies de tierra del planeta y buena parte de los océanos… Todos los datos producidos por los satélites, que empezarán a fluir en septiembre, después de tres meses de prueba, serán de libre acceso en todo el mundo… Los Sentinel 2 se añadirán a los Sentinel 1, que estudian la Tierra con un sistema de radar, una tecnología que permite la observación incluso cuando las nubes o la oscuridad de la noche cubren una superficie. Después, seguirán los Sentinel 3, una misión diseñada para estudiar la topografía terrestre o las temperaturas y la coloración del mar y la tierra, datos muy relevantes para la observación del clima. Por último, Sentinel-4 y Sentinel-5 medirán la composición de la atmósfera desde una órbita geoestacionaria y una órbita polar, respectivamente.
